Maths

It is our belief that every child can become a successful mathematician. Our curriculum allows children to become fluent and confident with mathematical concepts which can then be applied to allow them to solve problems, preparing them for their future.

We currently follow the White Rose Maths mastery approach from Reception to Year 6, which is supported with deepening understanding and I See Reasoning to enhance reasoning and problem solving. There is a key focus on developing and securing basic number skills in EYFS and Key Stage 1, this is achieved through the NCETM mastery of number program. We believe that these skills are the foundations of mathematics and once mastered, can be built upon in order to master more complex concepts. Our Pre-school and Nursery children are also exposed to an enhanced mathematical curriculum through master the curriculum, which closely links to White Rose Maths, preparing children for the key concepts they will be introduced to in Reception.

Our hands-on approach to mathematics helps children to explore and investigate our key concepts in maths. From Pre-school to Year 6, children access physical resources to aid and develop their understanding, eventually allowing them to think mathematically using abstract questioning. These skills can be applied to other areas of our curriculum such as, but not limited to:

· Science – identifying and calculating temperature, creating and analysing graphs, calculating averages

· Geography – creating and analysing graphs, understanding co-ordinates, calculating percentages and understanding population

· History – understanding the concept of time,

· Design and Technology – the use of measure and shape

· Art – understanding scale and proportion

We believe that mastering our key concepts in maths will enhance children’s knowledge and understanding in all areas of our curriculum.

Mathematics Vocabulary

Reception: In the Foundation Stage, language is mostly spoken. Of course this does not mean that children should not have sight of the written word, but preferably this should always be in conjunction with the appropriate imagery so that they can begin to associate and recognise words they cannot necessarily yet read fluently.
