PE
Physical Education (PE)
At Worth Valley Primary School, we believe that Physical Education (PE) is an essential component of every child’s development. Our vision for PE is to foster a love for physical activity, promote healthy lifestyles, and develop fundamental movement skills that will prepare our students for lifelong engagement in sports and physical activities. We aim to create an inclusive, engaging, and dynamic PE curriculum that supports the physical, emotional, and social well-being of all students, from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) through to the end of primary school.
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
In EYFS, our focus is on developing children’s fundamental movement skills through play-based activities that are enjoyable and accessible for all. We aim to:
- Promote Active Play: Encourage active play through structured and unstructured activities that help children develop coordination, balance, and spatial awareness.
- Develop Motor Skills: Provide opportunities for children to practice fine and gross motor skills through activities such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, and balancing.
- Encourage Exploration: Foster a love for movement and physical activity by allowing children to explore different ways of moving and using their bodies in a safe and supportive environment.
Key Stages 1 and 2
As students progress through Key Stages 1 and 2, we build on the foundational skills developed in EYFS, introducing more structured PE lessons that cover a wide range of sports and physical activities. Our objectives include:
- Skill Development: Enhance students’ skills in various sports, including team games, individual sports, and fitness activities. Focus on developing agility, balance, coordination, strength, and endurance.
- Healthy Competition: Introduce the concept of healthy competition, teaching students about fair play, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
- Personal Fitness: Encourage personal fitness and the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle through regular physical activity and education on nutrition and well-being.
- Inclusion and Diversity: Ensure that all students, regardless of ability, have opportunities to participate and succeed in PE activities.
Extra-Curricular Activities
To complement our PE curriculum, we offer a variety of extra-curricular activities that provide students with additional opportunities to explore different sports and physical activities. These include:
- Kickboxing: Through our kickboxing sessions, students learn self-discipline, improve their physical fitness, and gain self-confidence. This martial art also teaches respect and perseverance.
- KidFit Sessions: KidFit programs focus on fun, fitness-based activities that improve cardiovascular health, strength, and flexibility. These sessions are designed to be engaging and enjoyable for all fitness levels.
- Multisports: Our multisports club allows students to experience a variety of sports, fostering versatility and a broad skill set. Activities may include football, basketball, cricket, and more, promoting teamwork and diverse athletic skills.
- Biking: We offer biking sessions that teach students bike safety, improve their cycling skills, and promote outdoor activity. This not only enhances physical fitness but also encourages a sense of adventure and exploration.
Preparing for the Future
Our comprehensive PE program is designed to prepare students for future engagement in physical activity, whether in secondary school PE, community sports clubs, or personal fitness pursuits. By:
- Building Confidence: Instilling a sense of confidence in students’ physical abilities and encouraging a positive attitude towards physical challenges.
- Fostering Lifelong Habits: Teaching the importance of regular physical activity and healthy lifestyle choices that students can carry with them into adulthood.
- Developing Social Skills: Providing opportunities for students to work collaboratively, communicate effectively, and develop leadership skills through team sports and group activities.
At Worth Valley Primary School, we are committed to delivering a PE curriculum that is inclusive, engaging, and effective in promoting lifelong health and fitness. Our vision is for every student to leave our school with a love for physical activity and the skills they need to lead healthy, active lives.
